Battery storage - part of a sustainable future

Battery storage is one of the pieces of the puzzle when we build a sustainable future. Northvolt and Mälarenergi therefore collaborate on battery storage commissioning the first public battery storage system at Rocklunda in Västerås. The system deployed alongside EV charging infrastructure serves to reduce peaks in electricity demand of the charging station by more than 80 percent.

Battery storage is an innovative solution that helps peak shaving and load levelling in electricity demand. Nothvolt's mission is to create the world's greenest battery. Success requires sustainability at all levels; from mineral extraction and energy mix in battery production to recycling of old batteries. 

The collaboration with Northvolt is part of Mälarenergi's extensive sustainability work, where we take responsibility for developing the society we live in and help our customers live more sustainably. Peak shaving in the electricity grid frees up resources which can then be used for other purposes.

The charging station consists of a lithium-ion battery system based on the modular Voltrack battery system. The battery will provide power of up to 220 kW and a usable energy capacity of 320 kW and was put into operation during the summer of 2020.  The entire project is a collaboration between Mälarenergi, Northvolt and Rocklunda Fastigheter, and is co-financed by the Swedish Energy Agency.

In the future, battery storage will play a major role in how we can handle weather-dependent, small-scale and local energy production while using more and more electricity. Batteries can be used to compensate for new demands of EV charging, complementing the electricity grids and to store energy from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.
